Vespa velutina is an invasive exotic species native to Southeast Asia that poses a risk to biodiversity. It typically builds its nests in the treetops and occasionally in undisturbed, protected areas in buildings (such as stairwells, abandoned barns, chicken coops, or parts of buildings) or in bushes, and very rarely underground. Adults feed on nectar and ripe fruits, while the larvae primarily consume honeybees and other insects that are brought to the nest by the workers.

KIT COMPONENTS DESCRIPTION:

  • The VELUTINATRAP® trap is specifically designed for capturing the Asian hornet, Vespa velutina. It is a high-capacity, weather-resistant, and durable field trap. It consists of a large-capacity transparent base, a yellow funnel with a green lid to prevent rainwater entry, and a yellow grid to separate the captures from the VELUTINATRAP® ATTRACTANT.

  • The VELUTINATRAP® ATTRACTANT is a natural liquid attractant for attracting the Asian hornet, Vespa velutina. It lasts 60 days in the field and is available in 250 cm³ bottles.

LIFE CYCLE:

The mated queens from the previous season emerge from hibernation between February and March. Each queen establishes a new colony and begins building a primary nest where she lays eggs, which develop into around twenty workers by April-May. The colony then moves to a tree, creating a secondary nest from May-June. From there, new workers emerge, and by late summer, females and males are produced. The fertilized females disperse from late August to October. By the end of October and November, the colony becomes inactive, and the queen dies.

USAGE RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Pour the contents of a bottle of VELUTINATRAP® ATTRACTANT (250 cm³) into the base of a VELUTINATRAP® trap.

  • Assemble the trap following the provided assembly instructions.

  • Hang the trap in a suitable location, generally on trees at the edge of groves near pastures and close to water sources, at a height of 1.5 to 2 meters on a natural or artificial support.

  • Regularly check the trap. Renew the attractant every 60 days or in case of flooding in the trap.

DETECTION AND POPULATION MONITORING:

Install up to 3 traps per hectare from April to November.

PRODUCT STORAGE:

The product should be stored unopened in a cool, dry place. Avoid direct sunlight. Preferably use within 12 months from the manufacturing date.
