Orthotomicus erosus is a bark beetle that primarily attacks species of the genus Pinus, although it has also been reported on Cupressus, Picea, Cedrus libani, Abies pinsapo, and Pseudotsuga menziesii. Generally, it is considered a secondary species that attacks severely weakened trees, but it can also attack living trees in the early stages of decline or those under extreme stress caused by drought or fire.
The ECONEX ORTHOTOMICUS EROSUS 60 DAYS pheromone dispenser attracts both male and female beetles of the species. It remains effective in the field for 60 days.
The larvae feed on the phloem and cut off the flow of water and nutrients at the base of the tree with their galleries. Affected pines initially show yellowing at the top of the crown, which eventually spreads to the lower branches. Orthotomicus erosus also transmits blue-stain fungi, causing both direct damage to the tree and losses in timber quality.
APPLICATION PERIOD:
This species may produce more than three generations per year, depending on temperature. It is a polygamous species, which gives it high biological potential in Mediterranean areas where summer temperatures are high. For proper treatment of Orthotomicus erosus, monitoring with the ECONEX ORTHOTOMICUS EROSUS 60 DAYS pheromone dispenser is recommended to detect the right time to start controlling the insect.
APPLICATION:
For detection and monitoring, install 1 trap per 20 ha in forested areas, spaced at least 1000 m apart. In areas smaller than 20 ha, install at least one trap per forest stand. Traps should be installed and operational from May to October, in general. For thorough monitoring, traps should be placed 100 to 500 meters apart, following forest tracks, firebreaks, or forest edges. Trap density may range from 0.3 to 3 traps per hectare.
DISPENSER FUNCTIONING:
ECONEX ORTHOTOMICUS EROSUS 60 DAYS is a blister-type dispenser, individually packaged in an aluminum pouch with a specification label. Once removed from the packaging, the dispenser does not require any activation or opening—just place it properly in the trap.
DISPENSER STORAGE:
Dispensers should be kept in their original packaging and stored in a refrigerator at 4 °C; or in a freezer at -18 °C, in which case they will remain effective for 2 and 4 years respectively.
