Tomicus piniperda is a beetle widely distributed throughout pine forests. It primarily attacks Pinus pinaster and Pinus sylvestris, and has also been reported on Pinus nigra. It behaves as a primary species, capable of killing trees that are only slightly weakened, and it rarely attacks trees that have previously been infested by other bark beetles.

The ECONEX TOMICUS PINIPERDA 60 DAYS kairomone dispensers attract both male and female specimens of the species. They remain active in the field for 60 days.

Tomicus piniperda causes two types of damage: subcortical galleries in trunks and thick branches, and galleries in the twigs of the tree canopy. Attacks on the canopy are of little significance, as the affected trees are vigorous enough to regenerate the loss. However, trunk attacks are always fatal, since the galleries serve as entry points for fungi that degrade the phloem around the gallery. In addition, larval feeding causes mechanical destruction of the phloem tissue.

PERIOD OF USE:

Tomicus piniperda typically lays its eggs during the first weeks of March until August. After juveniles emerge (from July to December), they fly to the canopy to feed. With the arrival of colder weather, adults shelter in the crevices of thick bark to overwinter until the start of their flight period in March. For effective monitoring and control of Tomicus piniperda, the use of ECONEX TOMICUS PINIPERDA 60 DAYS kairomone dispensers is recommended.

APPLICATION:

For detection and monitoring, one trap should be installed per 20 hectares in forested areas, with a minimum spacing of 1000 meters between traps. On surfaces smaller than 20 hectares, at least one trap should be installed per stand or forest area. Traps should be installed and operational from early March to the end of September, in general. For thorough monitoring, traps should be placed 100 to 500 meters apart, along forest tracks, firebreaks, or forest edges. Trap density may range from 0.3 to 3 traps per hectare.

DISPENSER FUNCTIONING:

The ECONEX TOMICUS PINIPERDA 60 DAYS dispensers are blister-shaped and packaged in aluminum foil envelopes with a specification label. Once removed from the packaging, the dispensers require no activation and should not be opened—simply place them properly inside the trap.

STORAGE OF DISPENSERS:

The dispensers should be stored in their original packaging, either in a refrigerator at 4 °C or in a freezer at -18 °C. Under these conditions, they will remain effective for 90 days and 150 days respectively.
