ECONEX SOLID WOOD SHELTER FOR DORMOUSE is specially designed for dormice, grey dormice (Glis glis) and garden dormice (Eliomys quercinus). It successfully compensates the lack of natural hollows that these animals use to build their nests, achieving thus a stability and permanence in the forest ecosystem and resulting in the benefit that this represents in the fight against harmful insects.
It is entirely made of PEFC-certified solid pine wood from sustainably and socially beneficial managed forests, and is FSC-certified, i.e. FSC-controlled wood, 2 cm thick. It incorporates a stainless-steel hanger for correct installation and to avoid damaging trees. It is weather-resistant due to its layer of translucent single-component exterior wood stain in a honey hazelnut colour.
The front opens with a swinging door, which facilitates maintenance tasks. At the rear, there is a 40 mm circular entrance for the animal to access.
MEASUREMENTS:
Width: 18 cm
Height: 24 cm
Depth: 22 cm
Entrance to the shelter: 40 mm
Weight: 1.70 kg
PERIOD OF USE
Dormice generally reproduce twice a year. The first time, in June, a few weeks after waking from hibernation. The second time, from July to September, concluding in October shortly before hibernation begins, which lasts about 6 months until spring.
INSTALLATION
The shelter should be placed between 2.5 and 3 m above the ground. The part of the shelter where the entrance circle is located should be placed on the trunk of a large tree, avoiding direct sunlight and prevailing winds. There is a gap between the box and the tree trunk so that the animal can access it from below.
Damage should be avoided if it is installed in trees. For this reason, it is recommended to hang it from the trunk with the metal hook provided. A quiet location, out of reach of cats and people, should be selected. If placed on a wall, it is preferable to place it among some vines.
MAINTENANCE
When the shelter is abandoned, it is advisable to empty its contents and clean the interior with boiling water to kill any parasites that could infect the young the following spring. DO NOT HANDLE WHILE THE SHELTER IS OCCUPIED.
