The PROCESSIONARYTRAPNEX® L trap is designed to catch pine processionary caterpillars, Thaumetopoea pityocampa, as they descend the trunk of trees where they have formed pockets. It takes advantage of the aggregating and social behaviour of this species to capture the whole group of larvae as they make their way to the ground to bury themselves and pupate.
The trap is composed of a black PET sheet measuring 150 x 25 cm and 0.3 mm thick, and a polyurethane foam bar with a rectangular section measuring 7 x 6 cm x 150 cm long, with a corrugated tube running through the middle of it, which connects to a polyethylene bag with an opaque bottom half.
The black sheet is coated on the inside with a film of contact glue (solvent-free) to facilitate assembly and deter processionary caterpillars from climbing up the sheet, forcing them down the tube into the bag, where they are retained.
