Tomicus destruens is a beetle widely distributed in pine forests. It attacks Pinus halepensis, Pinus pinaster, Pinus pinea, and occasionally Pinus nigra. It behaves as a primary species, capable of killing trees that are only slightly weakened and usually does not attack trees already infested by other bark beetles.
With the ECONEX TOMICUS DESTRUENS 60-DAY kairomone diffusers, both male and female beetles are attracted. These diffusers have a field duration of 60 days.
Tomicus destruens causes two types of damage: subcortical galleries in the trunks and thick branches, and galleries in the crown twigs. The damage to the crowns is minor, as the trees attacked generally have enough vigor to regenerate the losses. However, attacks on the trunk are always lethal, as fungi enter through the galleries, leading to the degradation of the phloem around the gallery perimeter. Additionally, the larval feeding causes mechanical destruction of the phloem channels.
USAGE PERIOD:
Tomicus destruens begins to fly from mid-September until the maximum temperature drops below 20°C. Between October and December, it lays the first generation of eggs, which will emerge in March. When maximum temperatures in February or March rise above 20°C again, reproductive flights begin anew, leading to the laying of the second generation, which will emerge in May or, at the latest, early June. For effective control of Tomicus destruens, it is recommended to monitor the pest using the ECONEX TOMICUS DESTRUENS 60-DAY kairomone diffusers.
APPLICATION:
For detection and monitoring, one trap should be installed in forested areas every 20 hectares, spaced at least 1000 meters apart. In areas smaller than 20 hectares, at least one trap should be installed per stand or forested area. Traps should be installed and operational between mid-September and mid-April, generally. For thorough monitoring, traps should be placed 100 to 500 meters apart, following forest trails, firebreaks, or forest edges. Trap density may vary between 0.3 and 3 traps per hectare.
DIFFUSER FUNCTIONALITY:
The ECONEX TOMICUS DESTRUENS 60-DAY diffusers are blister-shaped and packaged in aluminum pouches with specification labels. Once removed from their packaging, the diffusers require no activation and should not be opened; they simply need to be properly placed in the trap.
DIFFUSER STORAGE:
Diffusers should be kept in their original packaging and refrigerated at 4°C or frozen at -18°C, in which case they will remain effective for 90 and 150 days, respectively.
