Recommended Information:
DACUSNEX® COMBI is a combination of 2 attractants. The first is a food attractant and the second is the female pheromone of Dacus (Bactrocera) oleae, to attract the female and male species of the Olive fruit fly.
The diffuser comes in blister pack form, with a duration of 90 days in normal field conditions. It is packaged individually in an aluminium sachet with labelled instructions.
Once taken out of the sachet, the diffuser needs no activation, nor should it be opened. Simply place it directly in the trap.
MORPHOLOGY AND BIOLOGY
The adult insect has a reddish-grey or orange colour which is highlighted by its black spots.
It has transparent, iridescent wings and part of the thorax is yellow. The eggs are white and elongated. The larvae are white and limbless. The pupae are elongated and yellowish in colour that darken as they develop into adults.
Two or three generations can be observed yearly, depending on the weather conditions. The winter is spent in pupal stage, although some can be found at all stages of development.
The first generation of adults appear in March or April and spend some time feeding on sugary substances, such as honeydew from some aphids, until they reach sexual maturity and begin to lay eggs. The female deposits the eggs beneath the skin of the olive selected. The olive must be fairly matured and not occupied by another egg.
It is common for this insect to only deposit one egg per olive.
After hatching, the larva feeds on the olive by excavating a small winding tunnel. As soon as the pupa has fully developed inside the olive, it moves closer to the olive's skin.
Flight activity of the Olive fruit fly reaches its highest peaks in July and October. With an increased amount of flight activity in October than in July.
NECESSARY MATERIAL
DACUSNEX® COMBI is typically used with the ECONEX YELLOW CHROMATIC 40 X 25 CM trap. The flies attracted by the diffuser remain attached to the surface of the trap
Once the trap has been placed on the olive tree, hang the DACUSNEX® COMBI diffuser from one of the holes on the trap. Use the hanger provided with the product. Do not place the metal part of the diffuser in contact with the adhesive.
DETECTION AND MONITORING
Place 1 to 2 traps per hectare, according to the situation and homogeneity of the plots.
The traps should be installed 3 months before harvesting and placed on the South side of the olive trees, between 1.5 and 2 metres high.
MASS TRAPPING
Place 10 to 20 traps per hectare, according to location and uniformity of the plots. One trap controls 500 to 1000 m².
Place the traps as soon as you have any captures and 3 months before harvesting. The traps should be placed on the South side of the olive trees at a height of 1.5 and 2 metres high.
It is essential to place a barrier of traps on the borders of the plots. Between 10 and 15 m apart.
PERIOD OF USE
To achieve good control of the Olive fruit fly, it is advisable to combine the two methods: detection and monitoring and mass trapping.
At the beginning of summer, one trap per hectare can be placed to detect the pest and observe its population level. Through established thresholds of tolerance in each area, the control measures are later defined and in this case mass capture.
The threshold of tolerance for Dacus (bactrocera) oleae is very low and varies according to the area. In general, between 1 and 5 captures per trap and per day.
STORING THE DIFFUSERS
The diffusers should be stored in their original packaging in a cool, dry place.
To preserve the diffusers during large periods of time, they can be stored in the fridge at 4oC for 2 years. In the freezer at -20oC, they can last up to 4 years.
